Steps to Prime Your Pool Pump

  1. Turn Off the Power

    • Switch off the pump at the power source to avoid electrical hazards or accidental operation.
  2. Close Valves

    • Shut off the return (could be MPV/Filter valve) and suction valves to stop water flow while you work. This helps maintain water in the pump once it's primed.
  3. Access the Pump Basket

    • Unscrew and remove the pump lid. If the lid is hard to remove, gently pry it off with a screwdriver. Check the pump basket for debris and clean it if necessary.
  4. Inspect the O-Ring

    • Examine the O-ring on the lid for cracks or wear. A damaged O-ring can prevent an airtight seal. Apply a lubricant or replace the O-ring if needed.
  5. Fill the Pump Housing

    • Use a bucket or garden hose to fill the pump basket with water. This primes the pump by providing the water needed to create suction.
  6. Reassemble the Pump

    • Place the lid back on the pump housing. Ensure the O-ring is seated properly, and tighten the lid to create an airtight seal.
  7. Open the Valves

    • Slowly open the suction and return valves to allow water to flow into the pump system.
  8. Turn On the Pump

    • Switch the pump back on at the power source. Monitor the pressure gauge and water flow to ensure the pump is working properly.
  9. Bleed Air from the System

    • Open the air relief valve on the filter (if available) to release any trapped air. Close the valve once water starts flowing steadily.
  10. Monitor the Pump

    • Check for consistent water flow and ensure there are no leaks around the pump lid. If the pump loses its prime again, repeat the steps above.
